Hints on completing the Observer Assessment

 

The Observer Assessment is really a feedback form rather than an assessment in the normal meaning of the term and it has three main purposes:

 

- to help clarify the natural Team Roles of the observed.
- to help the observed develop and project their natural team roles.
- to stimulate discussion and mutual understanding.

 

It achieves this by showing any variations between self perception and the perceptions of observers and by providing reports showing the combined results of the Self Perception Inventory and the Observer Assessments. These are generally far more robust than reports based on self reporting only.

 

Please note that observers are not "marking" the observed against a hierarchical or meritorial criteria traditionally associated with 360 degree feedback assessments. Observers are merely giving helpful feedback on perceived natural behavioural tendencies to help the observed understand themselves better.

 

The instructions on the assessment should be read in conjunction with the following additional guide notes.

When completing the Observer Assessment it is helpful to make a comparison between the person being observed and the "average" person. A tick should only be given when the description applies beyond the average person and a double tick given when it is felt the description is extremely applicable to the observed. If any doubts exist a tick should not be awarded. It is better to have a small number of carefully selected ticks than a large number of speculative ticks.

Confidentiality

 

It is recognised that some people may feel uncomfortable about applying some of the descriptions in the Observer Assessments, particularly those in List B. to their colleagues. Observers are asked to be totally honest however in the knowledge that none of the words or statements ticked will be personally attributable when the reports are prepared and the observed will not know who ticked which words or statements.

 

 

 

 

Complete the Belbin Observer Assessment by proceeding as follows:

 

  1. Go to http://www.belbin.com/Emailing/EmailInput-1.htm and enter in the Serial Number box: 000110BW (Note: Use the number "0" not the letter "O" when entering this serial number) and in the Password/Supervisor Key box enter the password ACCRED.
  2. Click on the Observation button (NOT the Self Perception button).
  3. Click Next
  4. Complete all fields on the next page and then click Next and follow the instructions for completing the Observer Assessment.
